Forty years ago, a toddler named Sarah sustained devastating, permanent head injuries when the car in which she was riding was struck by a train. After a brief hospital stay, the little girl was released to the care of her family. Thanks to her loving environment, she’d been able to achieve a level of independence, but as Sarah matured through the years, it became clear that those who loved her most would not be able to provide indefinitely for her. Sarah suffered behavior disorders as a result of her childhood injury, and clearly would continue to need constant care and support for the rest of her life. This dilemma is familiar to all parents and caregivers of children with developmental needs. For Sarah’s family, a state institution was not an option. If there were a way to keep her nearby, they reasoned, their close relationship could continue as their daughter lived her own life as independently, as fully, and as meaningfully as possible. Thus began their dedicated effort to find the best models of care for people with needs like Sarah’s. Her family concluded that community home settings, where individuals could be trained in behavior management as well as in everyday life skills, would offer the opportunities for the continual personal growth and enrichment that everyone seeks. With the active support and assistance of the community, local schools, and individuals who later served as directors, a new organization was born. Northern California Adaptive Living Center (NCALC) was incorporated in 1982 as a non-profit organization as a direct result of this family’s response to their child’s needs. Today, a dedicated staff provide support and service for twenty two clients residing in their own homes through Supported Living Services (SLS). Dedicated to the provision of residential services for people with developmental disabilities, NCALC wholeheartedly represents the dedication and ultimate intention of Sarah’s family - to provide fully supported living services that honor the unique potential of every individual we serve.
